max-small (2)

See you next time!

    Hello Max, how are you?
Thank you for your interesting topics about Australia. When I visited in Sydney in August, it was no rain. And, when I went to Cairns in December, it had little rain. But, when my son went to Sydney in March, he said it had occasional rain every day. Therefore, he took an umbrella with him when he went out.
I think cyclones in Australia rotate clockwise because they are originally from south of the equator. However, typhoons coming to Okinawa rotate counterclockwise because they are from north of the equator. If cyclones are formed in somewhere south of the equator and travel up to north, are they called cyclones because they rotate clockwise?

Hello Seiichi. I am good. How are you?
      Thank you for your comment.
Yes, the weather in Australia is very unpredictable. I have heard from my friends and family that lately it has been unusually cold and rainy, but it is usually very nice. The seasons are much lest distinct than they are in Japan.
Thank you for your interesting question about Cyclones. I was not aware of this myself, but after doing some research it looks like they do rotate counter clockwise north of the equator and clockwise south. However, the rotation does not have any impact on the name. ‘Cyclone’ is a term generally used in Australia and some parts of Asia, while ‘Typhoon’ is used in Japan and East Asia and ‘Hurricane’ is used in the UK.
One of the biggest natural disasters in Australian history was ‘Cyclone Tracy’, which hit Darwin on Christmas Eve 1974 and destroyed around 70% of the city.

        Hello Max,
Thank you very much for your quick reply. A big typhoon is approaching to the mainland of Japan. Actually, we say typhoon(台風) in Japanese and I guess typhoon is originally from a Japanese word. Do you think a cyclone which originates from south of the equator can travel up to the north? Anyway, I always appreciate your comments.
