Immigrant-Rooted Mayors Lead World’s Key Metropolises
A defining characteristic of modern urban leadership is emerging, as three of the world’s most iconic cities—New York, London, and Paris—are now led by mayors hailing from immigrant backgrounds.
The most recent and electrifying development came from New York City, which just elected Zohran Mamdani as its 111th Mayor.
Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist and former state assembly member, made history by becoming the city’s first Muslim and first South Asian mayor, as well as its youngest in over a century.
His victory is seen as a seismic shift, built on a grassroots campaign focused on affordability and challenging the established political order.
Mamdani, whose victory resonated with the city’s diverse populace, joins a prominent group of leaders in Europe.
In London, Mayor Sadiq Khan has been in office since 2016 and recently secured a historic third term.
Khan is famously the son of Pakistani immigrants; his father was a bus driver and his mother a seamstress. He grew up in public housing in South London.
His election was a landmark, making him the first Muslim to lead a major Western capital, and he has consistently championed a message of an open, multicultural city.
Across the Channel, Paris has been led by Mayor Anne Hidalgo since 2014.
Hidalgo is also an immigrant, born in San Fernando, Spain (Andalusia).
Her parents moved to France when she was a young child, fleeing the poverty of Franco’s Spain to build a new life.
The concurrent leadership of Mamdani, Khan, and Hidalgo is a powerful symbol of the 21st-century metropolis.
It signifies that the personal journeys of migration—once stories from the margins—are now central to the political leadership and identity of the world’s most influential cities.

■ Vocaburaly
・define 動詞「～を定義する、規定する」。ニュースの文脈では “A defining characteristic”（決定的な特徴）として使われており、その時代のリーダーシップを「特徴づける」「象徴する」という意味合いで使われています。
・hail (from) 動詞「～の出身である、～から来た」。”mayors hailing from immigrant backgrounds”（移民の背景を持つ市長たち）のように、出身地やルーツを示す際によく使われる表現です。
