Mike: Hey Emily, I’ve been hearing a lot about afternoon tea lately. Is it really still a big thing in the UK?
Emily: Oh, absolutely. Afternoon tea is more than just drinking tea – it’s a whole experience. It’s a lovely British tradition that’s still very much alive.
Mike: Interesting! So it’s not just grabbing a quick cup of tea?
Emily: Not at all. It usually involves a selection of finger sandwiches, warm scones with clotted cream and jam, and a variety of little cakes and pastries. It’s usually served on a tiered stand, between around 3:30 and 5 PM.
Mike: That sounds fancy. Where did this whole tradition come from?
Emily: It actually started in the 1840s with Anna, the Duchess of Bedford. Back then, dinner was served quite late, so she started having tea and snacks in the afternoon to keep herself going. It caught on and became a fashionable social event.
Mike: So it started as an upper-class thing?
Emily: Yes, but now it’s for everyone. You can have afternoon tea at luxury hotels, cute tea rooms, or even at home. People often enjoy it to celebrate birthdays, baby showers – or just for a treat!
Mike: And what kind of tea do you usually drink with it?
Emily: Earl Grey is a classic, but English Breakfast and Darjeeling are also popular. Oh, and don’t get us started on the scone debate – whether the jam goes first or the cream!
