みなさん、コーヒーは好きですか？よく飲みますか？
オーストラリアには、とてもユニークなコーヒーカルチャーがあるので、今日はそれについて書きたいと思います。
オーストラリアでは昔、シドニーやメルボルンに移民したイタリア人が多かったです。そのため、たくさんの小さくてお洒落なカフェができました。
オーストラリアには小さい町でも、必ず美味しいコーヒーを作っているカフェがあります。
また、イタリアのコーヒーブランド「ラバッツァ」がとても人気ですが、オーストラリアのブランドもたくさんあります。
オーストラリアオリジナルの「Flat White」というコーヒーの種類があります。これは、ミルクの泡が少ないダブルショットのコーヒーです。どの小さいカフェでも、注文することができますよ。
オーストラリアにはこのようにユニークなコーヒーカルチャーがあるため、興味深い出来事が起きました。それは、スターバックスがオーストラリアで大失敗したことです。
スターバックスは2000年から、オーストラリアにどんどん店をオープンしました。でもアメリカで人気のある甘いコーヒーは、オーストラリア人のお好みには合わなかったようです。
そして2008年までに、オーストラリアでスターバックスの61店舗が閉まりました。現在は20店舗しか残っていません。
かわりにオーストラリアで人気のコーヒーチェーンは「Gloria Jeans Coffees」というお店です。この会社はオーストラリアで創立して、現在は全国で460店舗もあります。また、海外39カ国にも出店しています。
このブログを書く前は知りませんでしたが、日本にも店舗があります！大阪に2店舗があって、神戸と鳥取にも1店舗ずつあります。関西の皆さん、ぜひ機会があったら飲んでみてください^^
ちなみに、最近は家庭用のコーヒーメーカーがとても人気です。2013年には510万個のコーヒーメーカーが売れました。コーヒーメーカーの中でもネスレの「ネスプレッソ」が流行っています。シドニーの僕の家にもコーヒーメーカーがあって、毎日美味しいコーヒーを飲んでいました。

I went to Starbucks at Circular Quay in Sydney. I didn’t want to drop in at a local coffee shop in Sydney because I imagined that the quality of Starbucks coffee would be as same as in Japan. The size of coffee per serving was similar to that of Starbucks in Japan. I didn’t see so many overweight people in Sydney and they don’t need to drink sweet coffee. Actually, I went to the coffee shop to use the toilet. I guess the rest rooms of Gloria Jeans Coffees are more comfortable than those in Starbucks.
I stayed in New York during “Obon Vacation” and came back to Japan a couple days ago. In NY, there are a lot of Starbucks and they serve a variety of coffee. The price of a cup of coffee is rather expensive, but the size of each serving is rather big compared with that of Starbucks in Japan. For example, when I ordered a small size coffee in Manhattan, they served me the equivalent of a large size coffee in Starbucks in Japan.
I saw a lot of obese people in Manhattan. I imagine they love to drink sweet coffee, such as Café mocha. In Manhattan, there aren’t so many toilets in town, so I went to the shop to use the toilet. Do you think it would be okay to use their toilet without ordering a cup of coffee?
In Japan, toilets are everywhere in town. Therefore, we don’t necessarily buy a cup of coffee at Starbucks. We can drink a drip coffee at any convenient shops and the price of a cup of coffee is very reasonable. In addition, the toilets of the 24/7 shops are completely free of charge.
In European countries, they charge one Euro to use a toilet. When they serve us something to drink, I think they should let us use their toilet for free. Sorry, it’s a bit of a digression.

It’s interesting that you visited a Starbucks in Sydney, as there aren’t many left anymore. I have to admit that I often traveled into the city to drink a Green Tea Latte at Starbucks. The sizes are definitely very different between countries. I usually order the ‘short’ size in Japan, but they do not sell this size in Australia or America. Starbucks in America has recently introduced the ‘Trenta’ size, which is actually larger than the human stomach! Australia also has a problem with obesity, but not as much as the US. A lot of coffee shops in Australia don’t have toilets, but you can always find toilets at restaurants or petrol stations (convenience stores). I hope you enjoyed your time in New York during Obon and are dealing with the heat in Tokyo!
